This Poison Heart - Kalynn Bayron

I recently read Cinderella is Dead by this author and absolutely loved it. So I was very excited to receive an advance copy of this book. It did no disappoint and I'm only frustrated because I have to wait for the next one!

I love what the author is doing with her books. Turning modern fairy tales upside down and making the protagonists young, Black and fabulous. In this book, young Briseis (what a name!) lives in Brooklyn with her mothers who run a flower shop. Which is pretty handy since Bri has a special talent for plants. When Briseis learns that her aunt dies and leaves her a giant estate in Rhinebeck, she and her parents take the summer to learn about Bri's birth family and maybe explore the limits to her power.

I swear, I WISH I had a book like this to read when I was a teen. Especially seeing a dark-skinned girl with natural hair and GLASSES on the cover. I am so excited for all of the young Black girls who will be able to read this book and see themselves in it. The magic, the romance, the adventure, ALL OF IT. And it helps that the book itself is a great read and not some schlock put together for clout. The love Bri receives from her parents is real, her block in Brooklyn is real, and her excitement at learning more about her gift is real. I absolutely recommend this book to readers. I cannot wait for the next book in what looks like will be a series.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
