Tariq Trotter in Conversation with Jon Stewart

It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about an event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) but people, you don’t want to miss this one.

On November 14, Tariq Trotter aka Black Thought, legendary MC of The Roots will be in conversation with the one and only Jon Stewart. Tariq will be discussing his upcoming book, The Upcycled Self: A Memoir on the Art of Becoming Who We Are. I read the description and will definitely be purchasing a copy. The book sounds extremely compelling and I’m sure the talk between Tariq and Jon will be engaging, thoughtful and very entertaining.

Tickets are on sale now. For more information and tickets, go to BAM's website.

An Evening with Angela Y. Davis

Yes, events are BACK!!! My favorite place in Brooklyn is having the talk of all talks. The activist, the ICON, Angela Y. Davis will be at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on December 2 at 7 p.m. as part of the Unbound book series. In conversation with Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, a scholar and public intellectual in his own right, Davis will be discussing her book, An Autobiography, which was initially published and edited by the late Toni Morrison in 1974. Now being released as a new edition, the book will have a brand new introduction, one we will all be excited about.

Tickets for the event will go on sale for members on November 1 and for the rest of us on November 3. For more information and tickets, go to BAM's website.

CANCELED - Meeting in the Ladies’ Room: Black Femme Energy from the 80s, 90s, and Today

My favorite podcast is coming to Brooklyn Academy of Music (“BAM”) next month and I’m ecstatic. If you haven’t been living under a rock, the hosts of the Still Processing podcast will be at BAM’s Opera House for Meeting in the Ladies’ Room: Black Femme Energy from the 80s, 90s, and Today, part of the Yours Theirs Ours series. The hosts, Jenna Wortham and Wesley Morris, will discuss the last few decades of Black women in music. Jenna and Wesley will explore how Black women have contributed to music using their “fearless, free expression of bodacious badness and straight-up sex,” especially during the hyper-masculine 80s and 90s. I, for one, can’t wait to see these two in action.

CANCELED - The Long Goodbye featuring Riz Ahmed

You may know Riz Ahmed from television shows and movies such as The Night Of, Girls (both on HBO) and Rogue One. But on April 3 and 4, he’ll be saying a very long goodbye to his home country.

In The Long Goodbye, Riz will be bringing an emotional blend of music to the U.S., using eastern influences to rap, spoken word and R&B. The performance will take a look at “the end of a toxic relationship with the country” he calls home. As part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Yours Theirs Ours series, the performances will be held at a secret location, which will be revealed once you purchase tickets. The Long Goodbye LP was released on March 6, with the live performance premiering at the Manchester International Festival’s series of pre-Factory events from March 26-28 before heading to the U.S.

Eat, Drink & Be Literary 2020

The most wonderful time of the year is almost upon us. Time for Brooklyn Academy of Music’s annual “Eat, Drink & Be Literary” series, with the first talk in the series beginning March 10 and it looks like it’s gonna be another great one.

For all of you newbies, EDBL is an author series sponsored by the National Book Foundation and held at BAM’s Peter Jay Sharpe building in Brooklyn, complete with dinner, wine, music and the chance to be in the same room as your favorite author. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend for the last four years and each one has been amazing. Last year I attended Min Jin Lee’s talk, author of Pachinko, and she was incredible.

This year’s authors in the series will be Tayari Jones, Sigrid Nunez, Ilya Kaminsky and Luis Alberto Urrea. For more information on the series and tickets, visit BAM's website.
