Somadina - Akwaeke Emezi

Whenever Akwaeke Emezi announces the arrival of a new book, I automatically put it on my pre-order wishlist because THEY NEVER MISS. I have read every book by this author and have loved every single one for different reasons. And with the newest book, Somadina, the streak of great books continues.

This is Akwaeke Emezi’s ninth book and third for young adults. The story is about a set of twins named Somadina and Jayaike who, in a village full of people with gifts, are late in receiving theirs. But when they do show up, the gifts these twins acquire turn the village and their lives upside down.

What I love about this book is that it does not sugarcoat what it means to inherit power. Power is glorious, addictive and also extremely dangerous. It can be used for good or ill depending on the circumstances and the person who wields that power. Now imagine an emotional teenager with that power. Terrifying, right?

But this book isn’t just about magic and teenagers. It’s also about what it’s like to lose the love of a parent. There were times while reading when I wanted to grab Somadina and shake her. The unemotional part of me wanted her to get her shit together and do what needed to be done. But the part of me that is a mother wanted to hold Somadina close and tell her things would be fine. That she is brave and worthy of the power she’s been given. That having a chosen family that is loving and supportive is still a family.

The ending of the book felt a little rushed to me and I wanted more when it came to Somadina’s relationship with her parents. But I truly enjoyed this book and will be impatiently waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail.
